Selecting the perfect domain name for my business

I have been asked why I always say that selecting the perfect domain name is the most important part in setting up your business on the internet. So today I decided to take a few minutes and explain my reasoning. So lets start at the beginning. The entire internet is driven by search engines this means that no matter what, people will always use search engines to find what they are looking for on the web. We all know that people hardly ever go to the second or third page of the results and that's why when you decide to create a website it's very important to take Search Engine Optimization (SEO) into consideration from the start.

Now I'm not going to cover SEO in depth here but I will point out to you that search engines give results based on what was found on a website. For example hyperlinks are seen as important because it directs you to something specific. The same goes for headers they are there to highlight something important on a website. So the chances are that those will be the words and phrases that gets indexed first by the search engines.

Now lets get to the domain name. Image that you are a Veterinarian based in New York and you need to choose a domain name. What do you think will give you the best results? I would say that if you can lay your hands on www.newyorkveterinarian.com then take it and take it today. It might set you back a few dollars to get the prime domain name but you will save anything between a year and three years in search engine optimization efforts. Take that domain and add some relevant content (nothing fancy but relevant) to your pages and your website will most likely jump to the top of a couple of search engines using the words New York Veterinarian in a matter of days. That was a very simple example of a great domain name but I believe that I have made my point. Remember what I said about hyperlinks and headings pointing to something important, now look at your domain name that points to your entire website and ask yourself what information could be more important than that? Being creative and spending a day or two selecting a domain name could save you a whole lot of time and energy. Remember that domain names are like the real estate of the internet with a twist. As long as you renew your domain name (address) you will keep it no matter where you move (from one hosting company to the next your address will always stay the same).

Don't get me wrong but just because you have a great domain name does not mean that you can now ignore the rest of the things that are important in SEO you still need to spend some time to make sure that you do things according to the book. Building a strong relevant site from day one will most definitely be beneficial to you in the long run.
