Structure your site for SEO when you start out!
Friday, 01 April 2011 08:17

Whenever you start a web site it’s very important to take some time out and do some planning. In this article we will look at basic web site structuring so that it’s ready for SEO.

I always sit down with my clients and tell them to look at web site structure as if it’s a pyramid. You start with your main subject and then branch out to your menu items and then branch out again to get your site content. You have to do this while keeping your keywords in mind as these are the words that you want to focus on in order to rank well in search engines. Let’s say that your site is about vegetables then vegetables will be your main focus and starting point. Then we start to branch out from there and make our web site menu items about carrots, pumpkins, potato’s ect. Now we branch out one more time and look at when is the best time to plant them, how to care for them, when they should be ready, include some recipes ect.

If you look at this very simple example you will see that we now have twelve content pages with content that’s highly relevant to our web site. We have our main subject: Vegetables we have our menu items: Carrots, Pumpkins and Potato’s and we have our site content for each menu: When is the best time to plant, How to care for them, When they should be ready and Recipes.

The image below shows the structure as I described it.

Basic Site Structure

I hope that this will help you when ever you have to start a web site in the future. This article is only to get your web site started in the direction of focusing on SEO. You will still have to spend a lot of time working on the subject of SEO!
